SURF Program — What to Expect
Surf all day! Starting at age 7, our SURF Program is designed for first-time surfers and those looking to take their skills to the next level. On Monday, each participant is assigned to a coach based on their experience level and sets their surfing goals for the week.
In addition to hands-on surf instruction, kids learn essential aspects of surfing including wave formation, tides, rip tides, currents, etiquette, equipment, and more. We provide a variety of foam surfboards ranging from 5'6" to 9' so participants can try different sizes throughout the week. Intermediate and advanced surfers are welcome to bring their own boards.
Activities and instruction
- Beginner to advanced surf instruction
- Ocean safety covering rip tides, currents, waves, and more
- Surfing etiquette and safety education
- Ecology lessons such as our impact on beaches and oceans
- Meet the Lifeguards
- Beach games, bodysurfing, and boogie boarding during downtime
Safety
- Coach ratios: 1:4 both in the water and on the beach (not including CITs or Directors)
- Certified staff: All coaches are CPR and First Aid certified and background checked.
- Lifeguard proximity: All locations are set up next to a staffed LA County Lifeguard station. Coaches and Lifeguards communicate daily about ocean conditions, and coaches always defer to Lifeguards on safety matters.
- Rashguards: Every participant receives a brightly colored SPF rashguard so they're easily identified by coaches and Lifeguards on the beach and in the water.
- Sunscreen: Reapplication breaks are scheduled multiple times throughout the day. Shade tents are provided on the beach for kids to take a break from sun exposure.
