SKATE Program — What to Expect

Learn to skateboard or take your skating to the next level! Our SKATE Program is open to boys and girls ages 5 to 13, with or without skating experience. Instruction ranges from the very basics — getting comfortable on a board and rolling from A to B — to intermediate tricks including ollies, flip tricks, grinds, ramp skating, and more.

Activities and instruction

  • Beginner fundamentals: balance, pushing, turning, and stopping
  • Intermediate skills: ollies, flip tricks, grinds, and ramp skating
  • Skatepark etiquette and awareness
  • Progressive skill-building throughout the week

Equipment

We have skateboards, helmets, and pads available, so don't worry if your child doesn't have their own gear. That said, we encourage participants to bring their own skateboard, helmet, knee pads, and elbow pads if they have them.

All participants are required to wear a helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, and closed-toe shoes. Wrist guards are encouraged but not required.

Safety

  • Coach ratio: 1:6 (not including CITs)
  • Certified staff: All coaches are CPR and First Aid certified and background checked. Our skate coaches are also experienced skateboarders with a lot of knowledge to share.
  • Protective gear: Helmets, knee pads, and elbow pads are mandatory for all participants at all times.

Location

The SKATE Program is available at Hermosa Beach only, held at the Hermosa Beach Skatepark at 710 Pier Avenue.
